Enterprise Development Workshop Series (EDWS)

Entrepreneurship continues to play an increasingly important role in Africa’s economic transformation, employment generation, and innovation ecosystem. Across the continent, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for nearly 80% of employment and contribute significantly to GDP and local economic activity. Yet despite growing entrepreneurial activity, many startups and early-stage businesses struggle to survive beyond their first few years due to weak financial planning, unstable cash flow management, and limited access to practical enterprise development support.

Current estimates suggest that approximately 11 million young Africans enter the labour force annually, while only about 3 million formal sector jobs are created each year. This has intensified the need for entrepreneurship and enterprise development initiatives that support sustainable business growth and job creation.

In response, Foreign Africa is convening the Enterprise Development Workshop Series (EDWS), a practical capacity-building platform designed to equip entrepreneurs, startup founders, and students with applicable business development tools and strategies. The first session, Smart Budgeting for Startups: Building a Strong Financial Foundation, focuses on helping participants develop practical budgeting skills to support financial stability, informed decision-making, and long-term enterprise sustainability.

Session Topic

This session introduces participants to the practical foundations of budgeting for startups and early-stage businesses. Through guided examples, interactive discussions, and a hands-on budgeting exercise, participants will explore how to estimate income, manage expenses, monitor cash flow, and build sustainable financial practices for business growth.
